Unraveling Lunar Secrets: Kudos to ISRO!
The moon's south polar region has recently hosted its inaugural visitor. Despite the region's rugged landscape marked by craters and trenches, India's Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft made a gentle touchdown as planned on August 23rd. The craft landed within a flat area nestled between the Manzinus C and Simpelius N craters, positioned approximately 70 degrees from the moon's south pole. Whole Mankind is proud of ISRO.
The spacecraft's propulsion unit, a box-shaped module responsible for ferrying the lander-rover duo into lunar orbit and detaching before landing, continues to orbit the moon. This module is equipped with the SHAPE instrument (Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth) designed to observe Earth from the moon's orbit, simulating observations of distant exoplanets.
The primary focus lies on the lunar surface. After the Vikram lander's successful touchdown, it established communication with mission control in Bengaluru, India, as reported by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The rover, Pragyan, subsequently rolled off the lander using a short ramp and embarked on its lunar expedition. The rover's onboard spectrometers will analyze the composition of lunar soil around the landing site.
While the rover possesses obstacle-avoidance cameras, its movements will be monitored to ensure it stays within the lander Vikram's camera view, as outlined by ISRO. Vikram initiated three of its four onboard science experiments, including a unique thermal probe to measure lunar soil temperature, a study of the moon's ionosphere density, and a seismometer to detect moonquakes near the landing site. A passive laser retroreflector array from NASA is also part of the payload.
Scientists are eager to gather data within the next two weeks, mindful of the challenging lunar nights with temperatures dropping to extreme lows. As shadows engulf the lander and rover, potential communication loss is expected due to the harsh conditions on the moon.
